Local Boy Scouts Troop 42 will be holding a flag retirement ceremony on Saturday, June 5, 2021, from 10 AM to 1 PM at the lot across from the Lake Stevens Fire Station 81. If you have a U.S. flag you would like to retire, you are welcome to bring it to the ceremony.
Many state and county government offices and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts have flag disposal boxes outside of their buildings. Once the disposal boxes are full, various organizations such as American Legions, VFWs, and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts collect the flags and hold flag retirement ceremonies.
Visit the U.S. Department of Defense's page to learn how to properly dispose of worn-out U.S. flags. Per the U.S. Flag Code: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Generally, when the flag is faded, torn, mildewed, stained, worn, and/or tattered, it should be considered for disposal.
