Crews from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) are finishing up work for the year on the SR9/SR204 project. There will be no other planned extended weekend closures until spring 2023.
WSDOT is building a series of roundabouts in this area to improve traffic flow and safety. Work on the project’s third roundabout on State Route 9, which will connect to Vernon Road and North Davies Road, will begin sometime in March 2023 (weather permitting).
Thank you for your patience as we work to reduce traffic congestion, improve mobility, and provide better access to businesses and more travel options with improved connections for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and drivers.

EXTENDED WEEKEND CLOSURES: The intersection of Vernon Road and N. Davies Road will be closed Thursday, September 29 at 9 pm to Tuesday, October 4 at 5 am.
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews will be rebuilding the roundabout at that intersection as part of its SR9/SR204 project to build four roundabouts in this area to improve traffic flow and safety.
In addition, WSDOT will be closing Highway 9 between 20th Street SE and 32nd Street SE for roundabout construction on Highway 9 at South Lake Stevens Road. The closure will begin at 9 am Thursday, September 29 until 4 am Monday, October 3 so crews can install a new roundabout at that location. Drivers in that area will be routed through signed detours via U.S. 2 and SR 204 to help avoid congestion on local roads.

Now through September 18, drivers can expect daytime and nighttime delays at the following locations.
Daytime Traffic Control (7 am to 4 pm):
Frontage Road between Seventh Place and N. Davies Road
Nighttime Traffic Control (9 pm to 5 am):
91st Street/Vernon
SR9 SB/NB
Road Closure:
92nd Ave. between Fourth St. NE and Seventh Place is closed until work is completed
WSDOT is improving the SR9/SR204 intersection by adding four roundabouts and widening SR9 to two lanes in each direction immediately south of the intersection. This is the project’s third and final stage with work beginning in the above locations, followed by road closures to build the roundabouts starting this fall.
These improvements will help manage congestion and improve mobility, provide better access to area businesses and provide more travel options with improved connections for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and drivers.
Extended Weekend Closures Coming Soon
Over the next year, there will be three extended weekend closures (Thursday night to Tuesday morning) to rebuild/build the four roundabouts. The exact dates and times of the closures will be announced when scheduled but the tentative timeline for each closure is:
- October 2022: Vernon Road and North Davies Road roundabout rebuild
- Spring 2023: SR9 roundabout connection to Vernon Road and North Davies Road
- Spring/Summer 2023: SR9 and SR204 roundabout connection to Seventh Place NE
The fourth roundabout at 91st Ave. NE and Vernon Road does not require an extended weekend closure. Drivers will be detoured around the site, with dates and times to be announced closer to the start of construction.
The project is expected to be complete by fall 2023. Learn more about the project here.

The Washington State Department of Transportation will award a contract for four roundabouts to be constructed to help traffic flow through the City of Lake Stevens. The project is to be completed by the end of 2023.
This summer, two roundabouts are scheduled for construction. The first roundabout is at 91st Avenue N.E. and Vernon Road. The 2nd roundabout is at N. Davies Road and Vernon/Frontage Roads intersection. This project has involved multiple state and federal agencies, and an extensive permitting process to ensure wetlands are protected. It also has involved real estate purchases and relocating utilities so there is adequate right of way.
WSDOT anticipates the two larger roundabouts for the intersection of State Routes 9 and 204 will be constructed in 2023.
There will be one extended weekend closure this year. Two additional extended weekend closures are planned for next year. WSDOT is planning a public meeting for interested parties at a future date. Project status is regularly updated on WSDOT’s SR 9/SR 204 project webpage.

As part of a broader effort to improve safety and manage traffic congestion, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is building a roundabout at the intersection of SR 9 and South Lake Stevens Road in Lake Stevens.
South Lake Stevens Road will be closing Friday, February 25th to support the roundabout project. Detour signs will be in place to guide traffic around the closure. More details about affected sections will be released soon.
The City of Lake Stevens remains committed to keeping the community informed of traffic pattern changes, progress, and updates to this project; this post will be maintained as information becomes available from WSDOT.
